Week 4 : (Store/ Warehouse Section)
This week our task was draw a scetion through a potal frame warehouse with a shop front connected. Our task was to understand the connection between the two that they are seperate structures because of fire issues . The structure also has a suspended slab a composite structure where steel and concrete are used together . This system maximises the properties of both concrete and steel; as steel peforms best in tension and concrete performs best in compression.

Article 2-relating to a current event in construction:

Week 3: (Portal Frame Construction)
This week we asked to do a section through a simple portal frame showing the componetns and connections. The main thing to take note of is the conenction between the roof and cladding through a fascia girt and cleat. The other major connection is between the roof components including the purlin and rafter to the universal beam. These components are connected through a 12mm plate welded between the rafter and the ub as shown below.

Here are some examples of portal frame construction. These pictures are of a childcare facility and it shows the capabilites of steel construction that interesting and creative buildings can be acheived.

Here are photos of more capabilites of steel, including curved rooves, something which other products wouldn't be able to acheive in some cases, steel is a very versitile product and these photos show this.

Week One

Site visit:
Completed building
Building and Location: Coles Supermarket, Victoria Street, Ballarat

The building is a steel portal frame and as shown in the photos below the structural elements are all exposed.

Shown here is an overall view the the building. Visible is large rafters as they're spanning long distances. Also visible is the Columns that are supporting the building as well as the purlins.

Another overall view showing that it's a large spanning building.

This is a connection detail of the columns to the rafter.

This photo shows the structural system of the roofing members. Visible are the rafters, purlins and diagonal bracing.

Another detail showing the connection of the rafter to the column. Also showing the prulins and bracing members.
